Fish traps and basket traps are so-called mobile traps, as they can be moved from one fishing area to another based on the movements of the prey. The most ancient fish traps are those made of wicker, but nowadays plastic or metal materials are also used.
Fish traps and basket traps
Fish traps and basket traps are tools that are anchored to the seabed by using weights. They are normally lowered into the sea in series, tied by ropes at a fixed distance. The catch takes place by trapping the fish in a part of the tool from which it is impossible to escape. The fish is generally channelled towards this point by using bait placed inside it. They are used to capture a huge variety of species ranging from fish to crustaceans and molluscs.
